Damayan at Jesus Is Lord Church

Last Sunday, Damayan got to know the Jesus Is Lord congregation in Woodside, Queens, where they were warmly received by the pastor and the church-goers, who were mostly Filipinos. Damayan was introduced by Ate Carina Canicon, who is a Damayan member and a labor trafficking survivor. After mass, Damayan Organizer and Case Manager Lydia Catina gave a brief introduction on Damayan, its services, and an invitation to join the organization. Damayan Special Projects Coordinator Mayra Bermeo, in partnership with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, also gave a presentation on critical information on how to interact with ICE. Fearsome as the experience might be for our immigrant community, they can counteract effectively with presence of mind and knowledge of their rights. Damayan also discussed services offered on IDNYC, NYC CARE, and information on Public Charge, answering common questions from the community.
