Healthcare for Damayan Members and Community

Our community is composed of caregivers, nannies, domestic workers servicing multiple households, offices and restaurants in New York City. These are people who work day in and day out to clean homes and care for loved ones, to enable their employers to function better and work. Providing care is their livelihood and their life’s work. Yet, these workers often function with their own needs often unmet. Mostly undocumented, these community members do not have access to free or low-cost health insurance, even as they are low-wage workers. As a result, even basic blood pressure or glucose checks are not heeded, and they are unable to seek medical care while continuously working. As proven by the sheer, disastrous impact of the Covid-19 pandemic to the community, they are constantly and disproportionately at-risk and vulnerable.

Damayan aims to bridge these critical needs and to local, available healthcare resources that community members can avail of, without fear or insecurity of their immigration status. Funded by New York State Social Services, Damayan members and community members can obtain general health coverage information, primary care referrals, basic check-ups, NYC Care application assistance, regardless of immigration status, from Gotham Clinic, in Jackson Heights. #HealthcareForCaregivers #NewYorkStateSocialServices #GothamClinic #Damayan #DamayanMigrants #DamayanMigrantWorkers
