Hope Against Hate 4 Summary
“Matanda na ako at kung haharangin ako, wala akong kalaban-laban, pero dahil sa Damayan self-defense training, natutunan ko na gamitin kung anong meron ako sa oras na may dumating na panganib. Lagi akong may dalang payong, tungkod at minsan pito. Siguradong gagamitin ko ito for self-defense at protection. (I’m an elderly and if someone were to attack me, I have no defense, but because of the Damayan self-defense training, I learned that I can use what I have if faced with a dangerous situation. I’m always carrying an umbrella, cane, and sometimes, a whistle. I’ll be sure to use them for my self-defense and protection.)” - Annie, 77 yo, nanny.
The Damayan Anti-Asian Hate Training Part 4 was held last September at The People’s Forum, where Damayan members got together to learn self-defense strategies to utilize in the face of the rising anti-Asian hate attacks in NYC. Funded generously by the Asian American Federation (AAF), and with the expertise of The Center for Anti-Violence Education, the training was a well-rounded and engaging experience, relevant and useful even to the elderly or the inexperienced in self-defense. Community members, both men and women, young and elderly, took part and learned tools and techniques that they all can use in the face of an attack.
The event also featured an immigration update presentation by Take Root Justice, with members bringing forth immigration-related questions to the attorney. Damayan’s Executive Director, Linda Oalican and Director of Program, Riya Ortiz also shared current events, particularly the 50th Anniversary of Martial Law, and a tribute to martial law survivor and social justice advocate, Lolit Lledo, whose recent passing has been mourned by the Filipino migrant community both in NY and LA.
With this training as well as upcoming events, Damayan is building on its mission to continually equip and empower members, as they face threats and violent discrimination. Standing firm on the goal to enable Filipino migrant workers to live and work with dignity, Damayan is proud of the Ates and Nanays who came forward that afternoon and learned of their strength and power.
