Campaign for Marichu
Marichu de Sesto came to Damayan after being abruptly fired by her wealthy employer of almost 15 years, Elyse Slaine. By not receiving any overtime pay or her salary for her last weeks of work, she is a victim of wage theft.
On October 29th, Damayan and new workers' rights organization, Justice First organized a rally in front of Slaine's Park Avenue apartment building to deliver a demand letter with the support of members from the National Domestic Workers Alliance, The International Domestic Workers Federation, Jews For Racial and Economic Justice, Domestic Workers United, and the Rude Mechanical Orchestra.
Every day following the rally, volunteers have been handing out flyers in front of Slaine's apartment and in the neighborhood to raise awareness about Marichu's exploitation and the fight of domestic workers against such abuses.
The rally was featured on The Filipino Channel's Balitang America as well as The New York Post.
The campaign is ongoing, thank you for your solidarity.
