Damayan featured on local TV magazine show I Am Pinoy, Proud Ako

On Sunday night, Damayan Board member and trafficking survivor Judith Daluz and Community Organizer Riya Ortiz were featured on I Am Pinoy, Proud Ako, a local TV magazine show.

Hosted by Ethel Constantino and Joel Inocencio, I Am Pinoy features Filipino individuals and organizations in the community and is broadcasted live on Facebook from Queens, NYC, every Sunday at 7pm. Damayan’s segment starts on the 16:00 mark.

The hosts, Judith and Riya engaged in a lively discussion about the situation of undocumented Filipino migrant workers in NYC, especially domestic workers and trafficking survivors. Judith shared about her hardships as a trafficked domestic worker severely abused by a Japanese diplomat and his family. She eventually escaped and sought Damayan’s help. Damayan provided her with a free attorney who submitted a trafficking visa on her behalf. Judith won her trafficking visa and was able to bring her four children, who she hadn’t seen in 10 years, to the US. To date, Damayan has won more than 25 trafficking cases and has reunited more than 10 families with more than 30 children and five spouses.

Riya also discussed Damayan’s free legal services for immigration and labor cases. Damayan works closely with the attorneys with Community Development Project at the Urban Justice Center.

For questions about immigration or labor cases and Damayan’s monthly legal clinics, please call 212.564.6057 or email Riya Ortiz at riya@damayanmigrants.org.
