Signing of the Mou: Nov. 4th Know Your Rights

At the October 1st town hall meeting at the Philippine Center in New York, Damayan Executive Director, Linda Oalican urged the Philippine secretary of Foreign Affairs Alan Peter Cayetano, to support the signing of the anti trafficking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Damayan and the  Philippine Consulate General in New York.  Linda told Cayetano, “This MOU [memorandum] calls for prevention, enforcement, protection services, legal and social for victims of labor and human trafficking,” said Linda Oalican. “We are appealing to you, to please fund this MOU.”

The next day, after more than four years of organizing and negotiating, the Philippine Consul General Maria Theresa De Vega, signed the historical  Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Damayan to combat the labor trafficking and modern day slavery of Filipino nationals in New York. The MOU was signed on October 2nd, 2017 by the Philippine Consulate with representatives from both parties.

The new partnership is being kicked off on Saturday, November 4th, with an Immigration Know Your Rights training. The event is being organized by Damayan Migrants Workers Association in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General in New York and will provide comprehensive and practical training for how to protect yourself when stopped, searched, arrested, detained or facing deportation proceedings.
