Damayan Offers Free Health Screenings at Woodside, Queens!

“Health screening is very important because sometimes you don’t have any symptoms but your blood pressure can be abnormal, and you’re walking around with abnormal test results,”

Ica, 1199 SEIU API Caucus Member and volunteer nurse

About two weeks ago, around 100 Damayan members and community members, especially domestic workers and labor trafficking survivors, received free health screening in Little Manila in Woodside, NYC. In partnership with the 1199 SEIU Asian Pacific Islanders (API) Caucus, volunteer nurses performed blood pressure and glucose screenings and a volunteer doctor held one-on-one consultations in tents while eager participants who were lined up patiently waited for their turn.

Many Damayan and community members work really long hours for low pay, and have long-term illnesses such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Damayan believes in providing free and quality health care to our community, especially the most marginalized - the women, elderly, and undocumented. Damayan also greatly values the safety and security of our members’ information, making sure that the intake forms are scanned and stored safely.

Damayan would also like to thank the following:

  • Our beloved staff, worker leaders and volunteers who helped with set up, registration, and packing/transporting up our equipment and supplies;

  • Our members who donated food for the staff and volunteers;

  • 1199 SEIU API Caucus @seiuapi and our volunteer nurses and doctor;

  • Amazing Grace and Kuya Efren for lending us their space;

  • Asian American Federation for their generous support; and,

  • North Star Fund and Neha Gautam @resistandrise @nehagautum_photography for photographing our beautiful event and team.
