QUEENS, NY - Two days before Mother’s Day, Damayan Migrant Workers Association (Damayan) rolled out its fifth batch of delivery of Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipino (STP) Care Packages to Filipino migrant and immigrant workers, mainly mothers, living in Brooklyn, Bronx and Manhattan in New York, and in Jersey City and Nutley in New Jersey.

STP Care Packages provide critical food assistance to Damayan members and community members that are hardest hit by Covid-19 in New York and New Jersey -- elders, the immunocompromised, those who are infected with Covid-19, those who were fired, laid off or had their hours reduced due to the pandemic, domestic and labor trafficking survivors, families with children, and live-in caregivers who are not allowed to leave their employer’s home, among others.

“Thank you, my Damayan family, for this STP Care Package. Thank you for always looking out for the welfare of the people in our community, especially during the Coronavirus pandemic. Thank you to all the staff, volunteers, and sponsors who share their time and resources, and dedication in serving the people. I pray that we all stay safe and healthy. We will get through this, Ka-Damayan! More power to this organization that has always been there for me,” Lorena said, a Damayan member, labor trafficking survivor, and young mother who lost her job as a babysitter due to the pandemic.

Since its launch, STP Care Packages have been delivered to 103 recipients with a total of 260 household members. Damayan partnered with RJP Mart whose team put together and delivered the STP Care Packages to community members all over NY and NJ.

Most of the recipients live in Queens, the epicenter of the U.S. epicenter of the virus outbreak. These neighborhoods include Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. Some live in other parts of Queens, Manhattan, Yonkers, and New Rochelle in New York. Packages have also reached isolated Filipino elderly and families as far as Long Beach and Long Island, NY.

STP Care Packages are made possible by donations to the STP Emergency Fund Campaign. All donations directly benefit Damayan community members severely impacted by the pandemic. This project aims to serve 150 recipients with a total of 400 household members. The organizers hope to expand to more than 150 recipients and then make another round of deliveries to the original recipients, depending on funds raised.

On behalf of the community that we serve, Damayan would like to thank our funders and sponsors for their support and generous donations, including the following: Neo Philanthropy, New York Women's Foundation, North Star Fund, Open Society Foundations, RadFund, and National Domestic Workers Alliance.
