Damayan joins 400,000-strong People's Climate March in New York City
Representing the Domestic Workers contingent in the Front Lines of the Crisis / Forefront of Change theme, Damayan marched side by side with the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA), Adhikaar, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, Answer Coalition, and other allies to stand against climate change in the 400,000-strong People's Climate March in New York City on Sept 21.
Damayan members and allies carried a banner that read "Clean Up Corporate Plunder! Fight for Climate and Economic Justice!" and carried a 36-foot long inflatable mop. Created by the Damayan members and Tools for Action, the giant mop represented the tool of domestic workers and symbolized migrant workers’ role in fighting and cleaning up the disastrous mess like super-typhoon Haiyan. People in Third World countries like the Philippines are the most vulnerable to climate change and are often left to fend for themselves after First World countries like the US have ravaged their country's natural resources.
The contingent also marched with the progressive marching band Rude Mechanical Orchestra which is celebrating their 10th year anniversary this year.
Damayan is one of the lead organizers of Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) Relief Campaign which raises critical funds and support for survivors of calamities in the Philippines in partnership with grassroots organizations back home. STP raised more than $50,000.00 for the Typhoon Haiyan survivors last year. #peoplesclimate
