Close 2015 Strong with Damayan at the Dec. 5 Holiday Party!

Damayan has remained on the front lines of grassroots organizing and building the leadership of Filipino low-wage workers, particularly women domestic workers. In 2015, Damayan made key advances in recruiting new members through our strategy in programmatically connecting services to member recruitment, leadership development, and political education. Service programs include comprehensive support to workers cases, workforce development, and basic health services. Through our Baklas (“break free” and “dismantle” in Filipino) campaign against labor trafficking and modern day slavery and the Damayan Workers Academy, we sharpened the leadership of trafficking, labor fraud and wage theft survivors survivors.

Damayan board member Judith Daluz was reunited with her four children. Judith is a survivor of trafficking by a diplomat and was the ninth trafficking survivor reunited with her family through Damayan’s anti-trafficking work. To date, Damayan has organized and assisted four dozen domestic worker trafficking survivors. (February 2015)

Damayan received the prestigious Paul and Sheila Wellstone Award at the national Freedom Network Conference. The award recognizes Damayan’s outstanding contribution to the field of anti-trafficking work. (April 2015)

At the Philippine “Independence” Day street fair, Damayan provided no cost blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings to 298 low wage workers, majority of whom were Filipinos. A medical doctor and an immigration lawyer conducted free individual consultations. The health fair and immigration clinic were done through partnership with 1199SEIU and the iAmerica. (June 2015)

Fifteen nannies graduated from the Nanny Training in collaboration with Cornell University Worker Institute, and received a certificate from Cornell Workers Institute. The certificate Nanny Training is part of Damayan’s workforce development program. (April- June 2015)

Forty-two workers completed training in Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA), through the support of the Interfaith Workers Justice. OSHA is also a part of Damayan’s workforce development program. (March & August 2015) (Has photo)

Workers and families enjoyed a summer day at the annual picnic. Every summer, Damayan organizes a summer socialization event to promote community connections and recruit new members. (August 2015)

Damayan Cleaning Cooperative officially launched on September 27 and is now accepting office cleaning clients! Damayan incubated the workers cleaning cooperative with the technical assistance of the Center for Family Life. The cooperative is a worker-owned and directed business with the goal of creating dignified and stable jobs. (September 2015)

About 30 new members with cases of wage theft, trafficking, and fraud in foreign labor contracting graduated from the Damayan Workers Academy, a four-part workshop series that included rights trainings and political education. The Academy is a key strategy in building wDamayan received the Activist Award from long-time ally Community Development Project-Urban Justice Center in recognition of our enduring partnership to help workers fight wage theft, labor fraud and trafficking. We will elect the Board of Directors for 2015-16. We will also talk about Damayan’s accomplishments for this year and plan for 2016. We’ll have food, drinks, some performances, and line dancing.
