Are you a Filipino American or Filipino immigrant youth who has a strong interest in helping the Filipino community and considering a career in community organizing?

Are you excited about being part of a robust Filipino worker-youth grassroots organizing to access basic immigrant workers and youth services and help in building the mutual aid and empowerment of Filipino workers and youth?

If you are this fabulous Filipino American or Filipino immigrant youth, you want to be with Damayan Migrant Workers’ Association ! And Damayan wants you to be our 2014 summer youth intern!

Damayan is a 501 C 3 grassroots organization in New York City of and for low wage Filipino immigrant workers and led by women domestic workers. Our mission is to promote the rights and welfare of Filipino workers particularly women domestic workers, fight labor trafficking, extreme labor exploitation and the forced migration of Filipino workers.

Damayan has a fast-paced work environment, and we seek enthusiastic and passionate young Filipinos who would be up to the challenge of organizing and empowering the Filipino community. As community organizing intern/s, you will directly work with the Youth Organizer at Damayan. In the youth organizing program, Damayan ng Kabataan, you will be able to learn about the linkages between the youth empowerment and workers’ rights movement through tackling real and measurable fun organizing project and activities in the summer.

We will be offering one full time or two part time internship opportunities this summer for the youth currently in high school or college. Our ideal candidate/s are youth who are driven and can relate to the day-to-day realities of the Filipino community. We want to work with the youth who are socially and politically invested in bettering the lives of the Filipino youth and workers.

What you will learn:

Real issues and challenges of the Filipino American and immigrant youth and workers in New York City- family separation and reunification, jobs, school, housing, health access.

Basic rights of immigrant workers and youth and how the Filipino community self organize to access services, protection, respect and dignity as a community.

Assist Youth Organizer to do Damayan ng Kabataan membership outreach and develop strategies for membership recruitment.

How to outreach and motivate the youth that maybe eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals (DACA).

How to organize a youth leadership retreat with women leaders and labor trafficking survivors.

How to organize a summer youth concert to call the attention of the extremely isolated youth and motivate them to access DACA, other immigration remedies and help in community building.

How to develop compelling content and messaging through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

What we require:

Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, but we will also train

Organized self-starter who has good time management skills and can work well with others

Passionate about social justice issues affecting Filipino youth and worker communities

Flexible and outgoing personality, and comfortable working within a community setting

Filipino American or Filipino immigrant youth.

We value the input of all members, staff, workers, and interns at Damayan and value the community building process. We will go an extra mile to make sure that your learning experience is both beneficial for your personal growth alongside developing our community. Our Youth Organizer is also prepared to tailor the projects for the internship based on your particular interest. You will gain tangible skills in event planning, leadership development, and community outreach through this internship. You will also learn how to work in a grassroots environment and have ample opportunity to network with other organization leaders and professionals in the non-profit field.

Details:

The position is contingent on a pending grant application to the New York Foundation Youth Summer Internship Program that will begin on July 1st and end on August 31st. You are expected to work 40 hours a week and be paid $10/hour. Applicants should be between the ages of 15-23.
